Have you grown frustrated with drivers staring at their phones instead of the road in front of them? Some communities have initiated "Distracted Driving checkpoints," handing out both citations and warnings. Should Western Colorado law enforcement agencies follow suit?

Earlier today, October 27, officers from the Montgomery County Police Department conducted distracted driver enforcement for the purpose of identifying drivers who were distracted by either texting or using their hands to use a phone while driving.

The morning's efforts resulted in the following:

  • Using Hands to use Phone while Driving: 31 traffic citations and 9 warnings
  • Texting While Driving: 4 citations and 4 warnings
  • Driving on Shoulder: 17 citations and 7 warnings
  • Negligent Driving: 1 citation
  • Driving without a License: 1 citation and 2 warnings
  • Failure to Display Registration: 1 citation
  • Displaying a License Plate Cover: 1 citation

Recently, a caller voiced his complaint following a near accident in Grand Junction. Would enforcement such as this be effective in Western Colorado? Would you like to see local authorities conducting similar operations?
