Mesa County Library Shows You How to Make Famous Movie Bread
Are you cooped up and looking for something fun to do? The Mesa County Libraries would like to teach you how to make Elven Waybread as seen in The Lord of the Rings.
Okay, I don't want anybody telling me they are bored. I've never cooked in my life, and I'm looking forward to making this stuff. Logan, from the Fruita branch of the MCPL, will guide you through Middle Earth, via your kitchen, to make Lembas Bread.
According to the MCPL's post on Facebook, this recipe originated with Aurelia Beaupommier but has been remixed by Logan Dickerson. As near as I can tell, this recipe calls for some vary basic household ingredients. There's nothing too funky about the recipe, so it seems we call all pull this off.
You'll need the following ingredients:
- 4 cups Flour
- 2 cups Brown Sugar
- 1 cup Water
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup nuts
- 1/2 cup dried fruit
(You can substitute 1 cup of trail mix for the 1/2 cup nuts and 1/2 cup dried fruits)
Don't be a chump - go ahead and use the nuts and dried fruit. Okay, what's next?
- Preheat your oven to 350 F
- Sift flour into large bowl then add the brown sugar, water and pinch of salt. Mix well.
- Add nuts and dried fruit (or trail mix)
- Flour up a workspace, then roll your dough. It will be sticky thanks to the brown sugar. Roll to a thickness of about 1/2 inch. Roll into a triangular shape.
- Cut the dough into squares roughly 2 inches wide (assuming you want to emulate the appearance of the bread in the movie)
- Place parchment paper (what's that?) on a cookie sheet, OR spray with cooking spray.
- Put cookies on sheet with 1/2 an inch to one inch between.
- Add nuts and dried fruit to the tops of the cookies and press into the dough. Only place on top - do not push through the dough (again, if you want to emulate that seen in the movie)
- Bake for ten minutes at 350 F
- Take cookies out of the oven and brush with a small amount of water.
- Place cookies back in the over for another 10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool
- Lastly, and here's where it gets really awesome... remove cookies from sheet and wrap in leaves. Seriously, that's the last step... wrap in leaves.
Let's get to it. If you prefer, Mesa County Libraries put together a very cool video, roughly 16 minutes long, with Logan giving you step by step instructions.
The Mesa County Libraries have come through for all of us during this recent crisis. From the get-go they've offered storytimes, teen book discussions, and lots more. This is the icing on the cake. Again, aside from frozen pizza and soup, I've never cooked anything in my life, and somehow, even managed to mess up the soup. Having watched this video, I think I can pull this off. Let's do this.
