One of the most under reported crimes rises in number.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, along with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office have reported a shocking increase in one particular crime. Rape.

I can barely even type that word. Those four letters put together in that combination is a very powerful force. It hits me personally because I have had two friends that had to endure not only the horrific crime itself, but the years of dealing with the after effects.

There was a story on KKCO News that reported the unbelievable statistics.

From 2014 to 2015 there was an increase of almost 19 per cent in the number of rapes reported in Mesa County. 127 incidents reported in 2015. What's even more frightening is that rape is one of the LEAST reported crimes across the board. That is scary.

From what my two friends have shared with me, about their individual experiences, is that this crime is so personal that most victims do not want to talk about it. It's not shame or embarrassment they said. It's so much anger that it happened to them, they didn't want to talk about it.

Raising more awareness and supporting groups and organizations that help victims is something that we all can do. And need to do.
