KEKB Crew Working in a Death Trap – What Should We Do? [POLL]

The crew at KEKB just discovered that every battery in every smoke detector in the building is dead. It's not that they went dead over time. To the contrary - they were dead the day we put them in. What should we do?

Obviously, the next step would be to get new batteries. That having been said, there is still this matter of the brand new box of 9V batteries we bought last Spring containing nothing but powerless batteries.

That's right, it turns out the entire box contained nothing but dead batteries. We probably wouldn't care, but there's a disturbing side to this story. We've been working in our building for the last six months unaware our smoke detectors were completely worthless. They had all been loaded with these new and yet oh-so-dead batteries.

What does one do in a situation such as this?
