How did they punish the 6 year old in Maryland after pretending his finger was a gun and shooting it by saying "POW" . . .

No they didn't call his parents, no they didn't give him detention, they suspended him.

The boy was a student at Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland.

A letter sent to the boy's parents, said," Your son... was involved in a serious incident. (He) threatened to shoot a student."

According to the families lawyer, "Five years from now, when someone in Montgomery County looks at his permanent record, they're going to see that he threatened to shoot another student. What they're doing is looking at the worst possible interpretation of a young, naive 6-year-old. This is a little child who can't form the intent to do anything like that."
