Today, February 1, has been declared "National Freedom Day." The date celebrates the end of slavery and recognizes the Unites States of America as a symbol of freedom. How do you plan to celebrate?

According to the website Holiday Insights, "National Freedom Day" was created by Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave.

Why February 1? It was that date in 1865 that President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment outlawing slavery. Some 83 years later, on June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming February 1 as "National Freedom Day."
