You probably know Minions, the spinoff of Despicable Me starring those lovably fiendish yellow henchmen, was a big hit in the summer of 2015. But did you know Minions is the first non-Disney animated movie to make more than $1 billion worldwide? (The Disney movies that have done it are Zootopia, Finding Dory, Toy Story 3, and Frozen.) That’s just one of the facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!

The Minions were created by Despicable Me directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. When they first started envisioning the creatures, their original designs were much closer to the orcs from Warcraft. Over time, the designs evolved into the famous yellow creatures kids around the world know and love. In their spinoff film, a long sequence is set at “Villain-Con 1968,” a clear homage to San Diego Comic-Con, right down to the fact that Scarlet Overkill’s big convention speech takes place in “Hall H,” the same room where Comic-Con hosts its big movie and TV panels.

‘You Think You Know Movies?’ is a ScreenCrush original series that dives deep into the cinematic worlds of your favorite movies and freeze frames a few tidbits you might not have known. We’ve already tackled Star Wars, The Avengers and Spider-Man, but this time we are talking about those weird sentient Twinkies known as Minions. Watch more installments of ‘You Think You Know Movies?’ below and let us know in the comments what movies we should cover next.
