This Person is Responsible for the Awesome Plant Beds Around Grand Junction
Have you noticed all the gorgeous plant beds located around downtown Grand Junction? Someone has a magnificent green thumb. Who's the artist behind these?
The next time you're downtown check out the various planters and plant beds. There's some true talent and passion behind these creations. Now you know who is to thank. Better yet, you can learn a few tips from the master herself.
If I Plant It... It Will Die
It never fails. When I plant something, it stands about a 50/50 chance of living. For this reason I tend to stick to evergreens requiring very little water or maintenance. Flowers? Forget it. They don't stand a chance with me.
Just this last weekend a neighbor took the time to comment how lousy my landscaping looks. I'd like to thank them for their constructive criticism. Okay, not really. I would have preferred they kept their opinions to themselves. Some people, though, have the magic touch.
Meet Grand Junction's Master Gardner
For the last 11 years, the genius behind downtown Grand Junction's magnificent plant beds has been Master Gardner and Native Plant Master Shirley Nilson.
Sharing Her Talents
Would you like to pick up a few pointers from Shirley? If so, you're in luck. Shirley Nilson will be hosting a Main Street Plant Walk where she will share her knowledge of plants. Specifically, she'll discuss those varieties that are easy to grow and typically do well in our environment.
Topics will include:
- soil prep
- what plants to choose
- layout design
- color combinations
- season maintenance
- preparing for winter
The Main Street Plant Walk is open to those ages 14 and up. The cost is $10. You might want to hustle, there are 12 openings remaining (as of 10 a.m. September 15).
The tour sets out Tuesday, September 21, at 10:30 a.m.
