The Grand Junction Police Department encourages you to get informed about the credit card skimmer devices popping up at Grand Junction retail outlets. These devices read your credit card information, making it possible for thieves to duplicate the card, and use for purchases. Here's how they work.

According to AccountMoney.com, the credit card skimmers can be placed in ATMs or even held in the hand of a waitperson or store clerk. As the card's magnetic strip passes through the skimmer, the device stores the information.

From this point, thieves can then make purchases online or with a counterfeit card. In the case of an ATM, the card can be used to withdraw cash directly from your account. AccountMoney.com adds that skimmed information from credit cards have been used to rent movies from Redbox rental machines.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department, the latest skimmer has shown up at a gas station on Horizon Drive. This particular device is different than the two found at the Bank of Colorado last week.

If you have used the gas pumps at the Shell Station at 745 Horizon Drive in Grand Junction, it is possible your information has been compromised, and you are encouraged to review your credit card statement for unauthorized use.
