Denver Coffee Shop Raises Prices to Pay Employees a $50k Salary

How much would you pay for a cup of coffee? Would you pay 50 percent more to know that the barista is making a living wage? One Denver coffee shop has raised its prices to pay their employees a salary of $50,000.

The owner of Amethyst Coffee eliminated the option to tip and increased the price of their coffee in May to pay her employees a hefty salary at the coffee shop's three locations. Prior to the change, a to-go cup of regular black coffee was $3.25. That same cup of coffee is now $4.50 before tax, according to KDVR.

Amethyst Coffee's three locations include 111 Broadway, 4999 W. 44th Ave, and at the food hall in the Edgewater Public Market.
