Grand Junction residents will get their first look at a major change coming to Stocker Stadium this week, when CMU holds a groundbreaking ceremony for its new football complex later today.

The city says the plan preserves traditional stadium uses and public track access while allowing CMU to invest in improvements and take on additional operating responsibilities.

CMU's groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for noon today, at Stocker Stadium. In addition to housing the CMU football program, the building will include a hospitality space and party deck designed for gameday and special events. If plans go unchanged, upgrades for the stadium would include a new video board. CMU says the improved Grand Junction stadium could host 100 events annually.

What Happens to the Lincoln Park Barn?

The Lincoln Park Barn was completed in 1923, and the first public dance was held on June 4, 1924. Thankfully, the building will not be demolished under the current plan. The proposal allows CMU to build the new end zone facility and renovate the barn to become a team gym with new flooring, restrooms, lighting, and temperature control. CMU would provide ongoing care since most of the city staff will be relocating to the new Community Recreation Center.
