Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado will be the first home to the Pentagon's Space Command, it has been announced.

The command will commence operations in September at the Colorado Springs base.

The goal of the Space Command, which will have the same status as Cyber Command and Special Operations, is to move technical developments along as well as improve the organization of U.S. military space operations.

With several space type operations already in the area, Colorado Springs seems like the perfect location for the Space Command, although no permanent home has been decided yet.

There was a Space Command from 1985-2002 but was disbanded in order to focus on homeland defense in the wake of 9-11.

The area is also home to the U.S. Air Force Academy as well as Fort Carson military base.

The U.S. Space Command will draw from all of the branches of the Armed Forces.
