Check Out Three Of The Tallest Things You Will Find In Colorado
The Rocky Mountains do tend to cause Colorado to tower over our neighboring states just a bit. From the 14er Mountains to the Mile-High City, Colorado is known for its elevation.
Colorado's tallest mountain is Mount Elbert, which rises to 14,433 feet. While nothing else in the state is that tall, it's not the only thing towering over the landscape. Where is Colorado's tallest building? What about the tallest man-made structure in Colorado? Does Colorado hold any national records for really tall stuff?
Colorado's Tallest Building
The title of "tallest building in Colorado" goes to Denver's 56-story Republic Plaza, completed in 1984. Republic Plaza is 717 feet tall and is the 137th tallest building in the United States. The 3-story marble lobby is worth seeing the next time you visit downtown Denver. From the Canadian border to the US/Mexico border, Republic Plaza is the tallest building in America's mountain states.
Colorado's Tallest Man-Made Structure
Even a small man can cast a large shadow. In this instance, there is nothing small about the Hoyt Radio Tower. It's the tallest structure in Colorado at 1,995 feet tall. Hoyt Radio Tower is so tall that if you placed Denver's Republic Plaza on top of it, you would be within ten feet of the tallest building in the world (Burj Khalifa Skyscraper - 2,722 feet).
The Largest Sand Dunes in North America
Did you know that the dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park are the tallest in North America? The Star Dune (above) rises 750 feet from the base to the crest. Sorry, Republic Plaza. Star Dune has got you beat.
