Most of Colorado's state parks require dogs to be on a leash in most areas. However, a couple of parks have designated off-leash areas such as Chatfield State Park in Littleton. On the northern shore of the reservoir between the Chatfield Dam and the South Platte River is a 69-acre off-leash area your dog will love.

Dogs can walk the trails or go back and forth between the two ponds. Remember that dogs must be under voice control during your visit and owners are asked to carry a leash just in case.

There's a second Colorado State Park with a soft spot for dogs, and that is Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora. Dogs can swim in the creek and even enjoy dog park beach access, trails, and a 107-acre fenced-in area. Remember to obey posted signs as you may wander in and out of the off-leash area.

Colorado's Off-Leash Restrictions

One of the main reasons off-leash areas for dogs can be hard to come by in state and national parks has much to do with the large wildlife population living here. With elk, deer, and even some black bears roaming our state, most places want dogs on a leash, especially during mating seasons. The ducks at the duck pond also want your dog on a leash.

Dogs can be unpredictable at times and may disturb these animals, or other people. It's best to obey posted signs to avoid penalties or fines
