Some Colorado Ski Resorts Opening Soon

Let's be a bit cautious. On The Snow reports the projected opening date for Colorado's Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is October 22, 2023. That's less than 72 hours from now. Looking at Arapahoe Basin's official webpage, evidence suggests they may not open that soon. The home page states, " Winter is coming! We are 'patiently' waiting for winter. We will open as soon as weather permits."

At this time, Arapahoe Basin reports "summer conditions" with a zero-inch base and no new snow in the last three days. A statement posted on their official Facebook Page on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, reads, "While we do not have an opening date for you just yet, we try to open as soon as possible so that you can make the most out of your winter."

These Are Only 'Projected' Dates

Less than two weeks ago I was at the airport in Phoenix, Arizona, and the outside temperature was a toasty 102 degrees. Just up the road in Colorado, temperatures are still in the upper 70s in Grand Junction, and the lower 80s in Denver. Today's (October 19, 2023) projected high temperature in Winter Park, Colorado is 66 degrees.

The Denver Post reports, "Actual opening dates depend on having sufficiently cold temperatures for snowmaking, sometimes augmented by natural snowfall. Last year Keystone opened on Oct. 28, Breckenridge on Nov. 9, Vail on Nov. 11, Beaver Creek on Nov. 21, and Crested Butte on Nov. 23."

The opening dates listed below are courtesy of On The Snow, KDVR, and The Denver Post. On The Snow states, "Not all dates listed here are official and final, as resort opening dates are projected and subject to change."
