The countdown to Real ID is on in Colorado. A little more than one year from now, residents of Colorado will no longer be able to use a state-issued driver's license to board a plane.

It might feel like you've been hearing about Real ID for a while now. The legislation dates back to the 2005 Real ID Act, which requires our driver's licenses and identification cards to comply with minimum security standards.

The 2005 Real ID Act

The Real ID Act of 2005 was recommended by the 9-1-1 Commission and passed by Congress. The goal was to increase security standards to prevent terrorists from obtaining travel documents. Once we reach the deadline on May 7th, 2025, Transportation Security Checkpoints will no longer accept state IDs that do not meet Real ID requirements.

Colorado is home to over 4.4 million people with a driver's license. The state has been Real ID compliant since 2012, so if you have updated your license since then, you may already have the Real ID star on the corner of your Colorado license. If you don't see the star, you will need to update your license to be able to board a plane.

Once we reach the deadline, a driver's license that does not meet the new security standards will not have a star and instead read "Federal Limits Apply". You can still use a regular license for driving, age-restricted purchases, or entering a bar or nightclub. The full list of documents accepted by the TSA beginning in May 2025 can be found here.

What documents do you need to bring with you to update to a Real ID? This will require an in-person visit to the DMV. You can start the process online here.

You'll need one document proving your identity like a birth certificate or, a current passport. You will also need two documents that prove you live in Colorado such as a bank statement or a utility bill. You will also need your social security number. There is a small renewal fee for the new license
