When traveling Westbound on I-70 in Mesa County, there used to be a sign to help prevent you from making an awful mistake and leaving Colorful Colorado after mile marker 231. Now it’s gone.

The Lower Valley Fire District responded to an accident Saturday evening at the Colorado/Utah state line, which resulted in the passing of our beloved “Leaving Colorful Colorado” sign. Here’s what happened.

Since the mid-to-late 1990s, the Western Slope’s “Leaving Colorful Colorado” sign has stood near the state line at mile marker 231. It’s become a familiar sight ever since Colorado returned to the wooden-style landmark signs at the border. At 6 P.M. on Saturday, June 20, the Lower Valley Fire District responded to a single-vehicle accident that involved a minivan that blew a tire and crashed into the sign. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured (except the sign).

So, how exactly will travelers know they have left Colorful Colorado? One minute, they’ll be in Loma, and the next, they’ll suddenly see a 'Welcome to Utah' sign. CBS News reports that the state plans to replace the “Leaving Colorful Colorado” sign on I-70 West at the Utah-Colorado state line, but there is no timeline yet.
