Leadville's Lutheran Church
This amazing old A-frame church used to sit at the old Climax Mine site on top of Freemont Pass, about 13 miles North of Leadville, Colorado. It was moved to the corners of West James and 8th Street in Leadville during the 1960s.
The Church Turned Pink in the 1970s
A resident by the name of Brian Shepherd purchased the church in the late 1970s and turned the building into a dance studio. He painted the exterior pink and black, which led to the nickname, "Pink Church." Residents of Leadville at the time remember Shepherd dancing through the streets of Leadville in a tutu. By 1981, Leadville Police raided the church and discovered Shepherd's 25 pot plants.
Modern Bells and Whistles
New owners purchased the church with the hope of restoring it in 1994. In 2024, this iconic church is now available as an Airbnb vacation rental for up to seven guests.
