Colorado Updates: US Highway 50

CDOT announced Friday, October 11th, that they had made enough progress with the Highway 50 Middle Bridge repairs that the route would soon reopen to all-day single-lane traffic. Residents of Colorado's Western Slope know how important Highway 50 Bridge over the Gunnison River at Blue Mesa is for East/West travel across the state. The bridge will reopen on October 16th to heavier vehicles allowing semi-trucks, full-size buses, and RVs to cross.

The Return of Two-Way Traffic

CDOT says roadwork/bridgework on the Highway 50 Bridge will continue overnight from 11:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Travel during the overnight hours will mean longer wait times as vehicles cross one at a time. Regular work will continue to get the bridge ready for the return of two-way traffic before the beginning of winter.

County Road 26

Since larger and heavier vehicles can once again cross the Gunnison via the Highway 50 Bridge, CDOT has also announced there will no longer be a need for a pilot car on County Road 26. This road can still be used as an alternate route as long as it remains dry.
