Grand Junction is closing in on Fourth of July, and most years that means backyard barbecues, fireworks, and celebrating under Western Colorado skies. This year, thanks to extreme drought conditions, we’ll have to celebrate without the boom-boom.

Mesa County entered Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on June 12. This means that while restrictions are in place, personal use of fireworks is prohibited due to dry conditions and elevated fire danger. If you are wondering what is allowed and whether or not fireworks shows will go on as scheduled, you are not alone.

There’s no getting around it. It's so dry in Western Colorado from Montrose to Grand Junction that the combination of dry grass, low humidity, high temperatures, and frequent winds means even small sparks will spread quickly. Fireworks, sparks from vehicle chains, and overheated vehicle engines are all causes of preventable human-caused wildfires. Each Colorado county that has entered Stage 1 Fire Restrictions is showing responsible leadership.

The short answer is no. Under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, any personal fireworks are prohibited. This includes sparklers, snakes, and all consumer fireworks on both private property and public lands. The same ban applies to all unincorporated areas of Delta County and all unincorporated areas of Montrose County.

For those who love to snitch on their neighbors over fireworks, this is your year. The only fireworks this year will be professionally organized displays that have been issued a permit. Grand Junction's professional fireworks celebration is still a go from Lincoln Park on July 4th. Delta will host both a fireworks display and drone show as part of the Western Sky Balloon Festival on July 4th, and Montrose will follow a full day of “Our Heritage” themed events with a fireworks display scheduled to launch from Sunset Mesa at dusk.
