The summer of 2024 was a nervous time in Western Colorado. Residents from Grand Junction to Montrose had to stress over multiple fires from the Rabbit Valley near the Utah border to the southern end of the Uncompahgre Plateau.

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control's 2025 outlook called for a "normal" wildfire season. So far, that is just what we are getting. What makes me nervous is that the heart of the season is still to come over the next couple of months.

Parts of Montrose, Delta, Mesa, Moffat, and Rio Blanco counties are already abnormally dry, and small fires have sparked in some of these areas. Much of southern Colorado is in drought, with the worst conditions in Archuleta and Conejos counties. Now, with triple-digit heat, it’s up to all of us to keep watch over Colorado’s 11 national forests.

How to Stay Prepared During Colorado’s Wildfire Season

A light to moderate winter in Colorado was followed by an unusually dry spring. Earlier this year, Colorado Department of Public Safety Executive Director Stan Hilkey said, "We expect to have fires this year. Some will get big, and we’re going to be busy. That’s what 'normal' looks like for Colorado."

Be sure to follow any county burn bans during the summer so you do not put yourself or your home at risk. If you see smoke or suspect a wildfire in Colorado, determine your exact location as best you can and dial 9-1-1.
