According to a story in the NY Times, the Center for Disease Control is warning Americans about a rise in the cases of Walking Pneumonia this winter.
The CDC's Winter Warning
The CDC says respiratory infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumonia have been on the rise in the last couple of months. Also known as 'Walking Pneumonia,' this infection is common in children and young adults ages 5 to 17.
Symptoms To Watch For
Symptoms of Walking Pneumonia include fever, headache, a couch that just gets worse, and the feeling of heavy fatigue. Children with walking pneumonia may experience diarrhea, wheezing, or vomiting. Those who get sick may start with mild symptoms, but anyone with asthma is at high risk of severe symptoms.
Best Practices for Staying Healthy
One of the best ways to stay healthy through the winter months is to wash your hands frequently and avoid crowded events especially when people in your community have seen an increase in illnesses. Discussing vaccine options with your doctor may also give you a better chance of avoiding illness through the winter season.
