The possible closing of the Orchard Mesa pool has been a hot topic lately, but the City of Grand Junction, like many of us, doesn't want to see the pool close, either.

Mayor Rick Taggart said in a meeting on Friday that the city has sent a letter to Mesa County and School District  51 about the pool, proposing the three "pool" their resources and jointly pay for the repairs needed.

Repairs on the pool are estimated to cost around $2.5 million, meaning each of them would have to come up with $850,000 each. They would also share operating costs going forward.

The Mesa County Board of Commissioners meets today (Monday) to discuss the possibility of a closed-door session. It is unknown at this time whether the school district or the County is interested in putting up that much money to save the pool.

The school district notified the public of the possible closing of the pool and offered to transfer ownership to whichever entity could keep it open and afford the repairs.

The operation of the pool is done through a three-member board, made up of the three entities operating it. They will be hosting a public meeting on the matter on Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. at the hospitality suite located at Stocker Stadium/Suplizio Field.
