Today, January 17, marks the 100th anniversary of the nationwide ban on the production and sale of all types of alcohol. Happy birthday Prohibition Era. Let's celebrate. Which Grand Junction bar would be the best place to raise a toast to the 100th anniversary of Prohibition?

It's hard for most of us to imagine a world where it was a major no-no to drink alcohol. Yet, 100 years ago today, January 17, 1920, the United States imposed a nationwide ban on just that, alcohol. Today, 100 years later, the breakfast restaurant I went to in downtown Grand Junction was serving mimosas at 8 a.m.

Over the course of my 50 years on this planet, I've run into a dry county or two. Back during my decadent years, touring with country bands, our paths would take us through counties and states with unique and somewhat odd liquor laws. I can remember playing an event in Rock Springs, Wyoming, where bars were allowed to stay open and run bands until 6 a.m. There were other states and counties where we had to be done and off the premises by midnight.

Well, things change. In 2020, right here in Grand Junction, you can enjoy alcohol at restaurants, bars, fraternal organizations, beer gardens, or you can even buy it in grocery stores. Sure, grocery stores, in comparison to liquor stores, have more restrictions on what times they can sell the products. Stores have to stop selling alcohol at one time, but bars can sell liquor a few more hours into the night. It gets confusing.

Today represents a Platinum Jubilee. This is a big deal. Where should we go to celebrate? I rarely buy a drink at a bar, but there are exceptions. I finally had a chance to check out Winger's Bar & Pool Hall. That's a cool place. I have yet to try the Cruisers in Orchard Mesa. Perhaps an outing to a GJ bar is in order.

Tonight, let's raise a toast. Where do you plan to go to raise a glass in honor of the 100th anniversary of Prohibition? Vote from the list below. This survey includes Grand Junction and the surrounding areas including Clifton, Palisade, and Fruita. If I missed an establishment, please write their name in, and it will be added to the list.
