Gerald Crabtree, a professor at the University of Stanford has written several articles lately explaining how and why civilization has gotten dumber. He claims that with the help of technology and the lack of competition in the work place, humans are comfortable with their life styles and are basically just going with the flow.

"I would be willing to wager that if an average citizen of Athens of 1000 BC were to appear suddenly among us, he or she would be among the brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and companions," writes Crabtree. 1000 years ago was the dark ages in Greece and most men forgot how to write or read. Crabtree is obviously better at Genetics then he is at Athens History.

But I don't totally disagree with Crabtree that humans are getting dumber. We have seen numerous idiots getting arrested for dumb things, couples getting divorced for awful reasons, and TV shows that are so dumb they make us dumber--Honey BOO BOO.

One of Crabtree's main arguments is that back in the cavemen days, if you weren't as smart as others you would die. Plain and simple. Survival of the fittest. Today, life is so safe and comfortable that the chances of someone dumb dying are pretty slim. It happens a lot, but not always to dumb people.
