I have often wondered what exactly a dog sees - or what it thinks when it sees itself in the mirror. Does it recognize the image in the mirror as himself?  Researchers say dogs have failed the mirror test, but it may be more a case of lack of interest more than a lack of recognition.

Dogs may show a lack of interest because they get no response from the image in the mirror, and it may because of the lack of sensory perception. There's no dog smell coming from the mirror, so why bother. University of Colorado Biologist Mark Becoff tells the Daily Puppy while dogs can see the world, smell is the primary way of experiencing and processing information.

Species that have passed the mirror test include dolphin, gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and elephants. They seem to know it's their own image in the mirror.

Puppies and kittens, because of their lack of life experience, are much more likely to interact with the image in the mirror, not fully realizing  what they see. Check out these adorable puppies and kittens and mirrors.
