To be blunt, not very good. Two thirds of American adults set fitness goals as some of their New Year's resolutions, with 73% giving up before achieving their desired hopes. In addition, those who have set fitness goals as part of their resolution, on average, say they have given up on them four times in the past.  According to Bodybuilding.com, the main stumbling blocks people encounter with their fitness goals are:

  • 42 percent say it’s too difficult to follow a diet or workout regimen
  • 38 percent say it’s too hard to get back on track once they fall off
  • 36 percent say it’s hard to find time

So, how do you go about sticking to those New Year's resolution? A study by Bodybuilding.com finds 11% of those who have fitness goals say that they seek fitness advice via social networks, while 32% say following someone who is physically fit via a social network would help them stay motivated.

Another effective way to make the resolution stick?  Spice things up.  According to Tribstar.com, one reason many people fail to realize their fitness resolutions is they find their program too monotonous and eventually stray away from it. Exercise can be fun, and your program doesn't have to be etched in stone. If you find your workout unenjoyable, consult a trainer and find ways to make your routine more stimulating.
