Fire officials made the announcement on Tuesday, October 9 saying the fire has been around 90 percent contained since August, but because of inaccessible terrain on the backside of Basalt Mountain, they had been unable to contain the last 10 percent.

The final containment was achieved by mother nature who provided the cooler temperatures, rain, and snow needed to get the fire fully contained.

While the fire is officially contained, authorities say there may still be a small amount of smoke from timber smoldering along the perimeter of the fire. The area will continue to be monitored even though the chance of a flare-up is extremely low.

Also, the closure area around the fire will remain in place as workers perform necessary maintenance work. Along with the containment, fire restrictions have been lifted in the White River National Forest and Pitkin County.
