Two New Gun Bills Facing Colorado Legislature

On the heels of the "Red Flag" law, Colorado Democrats are preparing two more bills designed to keep firearms secure.

The first bill is to make sure gun owners securely store their firearms so that children may not have access to them and discharge them either intentionally or unintentionally.

The bill's sponsor, Rep Kyle Mullica, a Democrat from Northglenn, himself a gun owner had this to say about the bill he is sponsoring:

“I completely believe that people have the right to own and bear arms — my family and I own guns — but we want to make sure they’re properly stored and there’s not a risk.”

The second bill, sponsored by Aurora Democrat Rep Tom Sullivan would require anyone who has had a firearm lost or stolen to report it within a few days, the biggest concern being from the theft of a firearm.

While neither has yet been introduced, both are expected to be during the next legislative session.

House Republicans are expected to oppose both pieces of legislation, stating the "lost and stolen" bill would make criminals out of victims of crime while the bill for safe storage of firearms would make defending one's home more difficult.
