February 8, 2016, was a tragic day for both a family and a community. That day, Mesa County Sheriff Deputy Derek Geer was killed in the line of duty. To honor and remember this peace officer, a moment of silence will take place on the first anniversary of his death.

When Mesa County Sheriffs Deputy Derek Geer was killed in the line of duty in February, he hoped, as an organ donor, that someday his death might save another's life. What he didn't know, is it would happen much sooner than expected.

The Western Colorado Peace Officers Academy has created a scholarship in memory of Deputy Derek Geer.
