2013 Colorado Flood

The project on US Highway 34 through the Big Thompson Canyon is almost completed. Last May’s reopening of the canyon marked the end of all long-term closures.

We are seeing conditions improve and roads are beginning to re-open, however many in Weld County still remain flooded. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has now re-opened both directions of I-25 in all areas that were previously closed.

If you have been watching TV coverage of the Colorado floods, chances are you have seen this now iconic image of Greeley resident Tommy Meyer leading his horses to safety as the south Platte River crested its banks and flooded his farm. We got a chance to catch up with him after the storm and capture his story.

Yesterday there was a letter posted to reddit claiming that a woman in Masonville had locked the gate on her private road, preventing 400+ residents from escaping the flooded town of Drake, Colorado. Read the truth behind the letter here...

As drier weather begins to move into Colorado's flood-stricken areas, search and rescue crews can begin to make their way into some of the more devastated areas to help stranded residents. The Colorado Office of Emergency Management has released damage assessments from the areas involved.

In the wake of all the flooding on the Front Range, The Salvation Army of Grand Junction is currently asking for money donations to help with long-term recovery efforts.

The devastation being wrought on by this floodwater is almost incomprehensible. Highway 34 has pretty much been completely washed out above Loveland's Dam Store in the Big Thompson Canyon.

Loveland was split in two by floodwaters from the Big Thompson River last night, and crews are currently working to reopen north-south access. City fire, police, utilities and public works crews, staged both on the north and south sides of the river, are working to maintain services to residents...

The Front Range of Colorado has been pounded with record-level rains causing disastrous flooding, evacuations and stranding area residents due to road closures. Our thoughts go out to the residents of Boulder, Denver, Longmont and Colorado Springs.

The flood waters that caused the Big Thompson River and Poudre River to rise last night are causing problems with roadways and bridges in Northern Colorado. Many major arteries including I-25 have been shut down, and in the towns of Fort Collins and Loveland virtually every bridge that crosses these major rivers is now closed.
