Wildlife biologists are developing a management plan for mule deer herds on the Grand Mesa and want people to offer comments that will help create a successful plan.

The new management plan will affect Game Management Units 52, 411 and 521. These units are north of Delta on the south flank of the Grand Mesa.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) are particularly interested in comments and ideas from landowners, hunters and anyone who has an interest in herds in the specified area.

The proposed plan would allow for a mule deer population of 8,000 to 10,000. The target buck-to-doe ratio is 25 to 30 bucks per 100 does.

While drafting a plan, CPW considers hunter harvest, habitat conditions, agricultural conflicts, public perception, and surveys and comments from the public.

A draft of the proposed management plan is available on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website. Comments can also be emailed to CPW Biologist Evan Phillips (Evan.Phillips@state.co.us). The deadline for comments is Thursday, November 30.
