Some of country music's biggest hitmakers have cut songs that make fun of the genre they love. In some cases (see No. 1 on this list) it's done playfully. In other cases (see No. 8 and No. 6) the singer isn't so nice.

Artists with less to lose are able to take big swipes at country music, and so you'll find celebrated songs by Aaron Lewis and Kevin Fowler on this list of eight songs that make fun of country music. Count Halfway to Hazard in that group as well. Maybe you could even include George Strait and Alan Jackson. When they released "Murder on Music Row" everything both men touched became gospel, so the risk was minimized.

As for Eric Church, Maddie & Tae and Rascal Flatts? Their respective careers were in a more tenuous position, and the results have reflected that. Only one of this group of artist's songs were released to radio. Actually, terrestrial radio generally ignores songs that make fun of country music, but satellite radio is more willing. You may have heard songs like Lewis' "That Ain't Country" on SiriusXM in 2016.

Country music is for humble people, and if you can't make fun or yourself (or at least take a joke) you're probably not long for the job. Of course, some songs go too far. That may be a topic left for a future episode of This List.
