Colorado Was Featured Every Week on This Popular TV Show

Back in the 1970s, we used to follow the adventures of Mork & Mindy, a weekly television show set in Boulder, Colorado. It starred the late Robin Williams as Mork and Pam Dawber as Mindy. The show debuted on September 14, 1978, on ABC.

Why is This Episode a Standout?

According to History Colorado, on November 11, 1979, Robin Williams joined the Denver Broncos cheerleading squad for a live game at the Mile High Stadium in front of over 70,000 fans. The Broncos played the New England Patriots, winning the game 45 to 10.

As you can see, Robin Williams, a.k.a. Mork, donned the full cheerleading outfit including the timeless cowboy boots and orange scarf.

Would This Represent the First Time the NFL Featured a Male Cheerleader?

There's some debate about this. According to npr.org, the 2019 Football season was the first time that the NFL had male cheerleaders when Quinton Peron, Napoleon Jinnies, and Jesse Hernandez participated as part of the New Orleans Saints' cheerleading squad.

In contrast to this, Robin Williams appeared in full Broncos regalia on the Mork & Mindy episode "Hold That Mork" which aired November 25, 1979, during the show's second season. History Colorado adds, "The late comedian holds the record for being the first male cheerleader in the NFL."

Looking back on my childhood in Grand Junction, this episode was one of those where Colorado residents were glued to their TVs. We knew it was coming. It was kind of like the episode of Happy Days when Fonzie jumped his motorcycle over the chicken shack at Arnold's - everyone watched.

Wow, it's been 42 years. That's hard to believe. Personally, I always got a kick out of the idea of a TV show taking place in Colorado. To have Mork join the Denver Broncos cheerleaders was simply icing on the cake.
