A Grand Junction man died over the weekend when his parachute failed to open during a demonstration over the Hudson River in New Jersey.

According to the Denver Post, 27 year-old Remington Peters, a Navy Seal,  perished Sunday when his parachute malfunctioned during a demonstration by the Navy parachute team, the Leap Frogs.

Reports indicate Peters was one of four parachutists in the maneuver involving two helicopters, but his parachute failed to open. The caused of the malfunction is under investigation.

We pass along our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Remington's family during this most difficult time, and to a community that is mourning one of its own.

Even for those of us that didn't know Remington, it feels like losing a member of the family. Our hearts are saddened by this tragic loss, yet, we are extremely thankful for his service to our country, and we know his family is so very proud of the outstanding individual he was.

There will be a service June 9 at Victory Life Church.
