Cold and flu season is coming, but one simple trick can keep you in the clear. It is common to see people sneeze or cough and not properly cover their mouth which makes it your responsibility to avoid their germs.

It's been discovered that sneeze germs and mucus can travel up to 26 feet. That means one simple sneeze can infect many around, including someone not even in close contact with the host.

So the next time you see someone sneeze? A nurse we spoke to, who requested to remain nameless, recommended holding your breath for 30 seconds. If you can't do this, cover your mouth and nose for 30 seconds to give these germs time to hit the ground and be less infectious. Remember, these infectious droplets can travel far so if someone in the room sneezes, it's still smart to do this. MythBusters Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage showed that mucus can travel up to 40 miles per hour as well.

The host plays an important role too. If you are sick, sneeze into your elbow or arm to avoid the spread of sickness. Germs can also travel through things like air conditioners, which means they can travel between buildings. Even if no one is around, still cover your mouth.
