Meet Karen, the 31-year-old monkey who just celebrated her birthday at the Denver Zoo. This Karen is not your typical Karen. Karen the monkey is very sweet and a lot hairier than your typical Karen.

Karen is a Hanuman langur who moved into the Denver Zoo in 2013. Hanuman langurs are native to the Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India, according to the Denver Zoo.

Hanuman langurs have an average lifespan of 20 years, but not Karen. Karen the monkey just celebrated her 31st birthday at the Denver Zoo with lots of treats and presents.

You'll notice that Karen doesn't have the 'can I speak to the manager' haircut or attitude nor does she drive a minivan. (We're pretty sure this Karen can't even drive and has had the same haircut her whole life.) The Denver Zoo stated that this Karen is different because she's a sweetheart and is loved 'by all who care for her.'

Karen the monkey was named 31 years ago, so zookeepers couldn't anticipate the whole Karen trend, according to the Denver Zoo. Some of the comments on the post about Karen the monkey on the Denver Zoo's Facebook include:

  • Glad to hear Karen's not a Karen
  • The best kind of "Karen"
  • And lots and lots of happy birthdays

We're so happy to see Karen the monkey being celebrated and showered with love. We hope that this birthday was even better than the last and happy that there's a Karen around to break the stereotype.
