After six months of work, the city of Grand Junction is inviting the public to celebrate the completion of the North Avenue improvement project.

The project  spanning the stretch between 12th Street and 23rd Street, includes eight-foot wide sidewalks separated from the travel lanes by landscaping, pedestrian lighting, and median improvements. Unseen is the underground conduit for an eventual broadband provider to bring gigabit speeds along the corridor.

In the video, you can see some of the work that has been done, but in the spring when the trees have leaves you will really be able to tell how fantastic the revitalized area of North Avenue looks. The bulk of the work was on the north side of the street, but there were also improvements on the south side along Lincoln Park Golf Course.

The project was primarily funded by a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Federal Highway Administration, and a $600,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. The remaining $2 million was funded by a 3/4 cent city sales tax and transportation impact fees.

The community is invited to a ribbon cutting and celebration Thursday, October 27 from 5:00PM-6:00PM at the northeast corner of 15th and North. Food and prizes have been donated for the event by the North Avenue Owners' Association including two BMX bikes and some ski tune-ups. There will also be games, touch a truck and mascots - and they tell us - plenty of parking.

According to Sam Rainguet, Grand Junction Communications Manager, the city hopes to eventually obtain funding for the remaining 3 1/4 miles of North Avenue to get it up to the same standard as what has just been complete.
