Here in Western Colorado, we are blessed to get rainfall like we enjoyed last week. In our arid environment, the welcome rainfall prevents our lawns from looking like garbage, our vegetation stands a chance of getting off to a good start, and half our state doesn't burn down. However, some may argue the rain messes up their exercise plans. Foul! Here are five benefits to jogging in the rain.

  1. You won't die from heat exhaustion. That's always a nice touch.
  2. You can get in a longer, more intense workout.
  3. You will work more muscles. The careful footing needed when jogging in wet conditions forces you to use coordinating muscles, conditioning your legs as if you were trail running.
  4. You will toughen up both mentally and physically when running in "less than ideal" conditions.
  5. You won't have to clean your shoes.

Last night, Guard Dog Fluffy wanted to take his nightly jog, but I wimped out because it was raining. My apologies, Fluffy. Seems my dog had the right idea. With any luck, we'll have a continued rainy Spring, and an enjoyable, healthy Summer.
