July 12 through July 19 was a busy week for the Click It or Ticket initiative in Colorado.

According to North Forty News, the Colorado Department of Transportation and a multitude of law enforcement agencies cited a total of 1,695 drivers for not wearing seat belts during that span.

Statistics show there’s a 1 in 33 chance you’ll be in a car crash in a given year and wearing a seat belt is the best way to prevent injury or death,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew.

Last week, 59 law enforcement agencies across Colorado partnered to crack down on seat belt laws, as reported by North Forty News. In Colorado last year, 196 unbuckled drivers and passengers died in car accidents.

Citations also went out to parents who had not properly restrained children 15 and younger in their seat.

Drivers can be pulled over if an officer sees the driver or a passenger without their seat belt on. If you are pulled over for another traffic violation and do not have your seat belt on, you can receive a Click It or Ticket citation at that time.
