Mesa County has been targeted by a number of scams recently and the Mesa County Sheriff's Office wants you to be aware of the most common scams plaguing residents.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, these are the three most common scams being reported.

  • Relative in Need of Funds - The caller will ask you to wire them money to bail them out of jail, pay the IRS or that they're traveling out of the country and need money.
  • Computer Virus Update - The caller will tell you they're from a computer company, (Apple, Microsoft, McAfee, etc.), and request remote access to you computer for a virus software update.
  • Cell Phone Company Claims Outstanding Bill - The caller claims to be from your cell provider and asks for personal and payment information including debit/credit card numbers. They may also ask to have money wired to them.

The Sheriff's Office advises,

In any cold call solicitations, where you CAN NOT be certain of who is CALLING YOU, always treat it with skepticism, at a minimum. No legitimate company will be upset with you verifying the legitimacy of the information they are contacting you about. Take the time to vet the claim, if you are in fact serious about pursuing their pitch. Also, government agencies (such as the IRS, law enforcement, etc.) don't call you to pay outstanding debt via phone.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud or a scam, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office asks that you file a report by calling (970) 242-6707.
