An escape attempt at the Mesa County Detention Facility was foiled over the weekend.

The escape attempt happened at around 9:00 Saturday morning when 25-year-old Malcolm Martin, of Grand Junction, climbed up into a crawl space above the ceiling tiles. The attempted jailbreak went awry as Martin was moving to another part of the jail. Detention deputies heard a noise in the ceiling, which turned out to be Martin in the ceiling and they proceeded to apprehend him.

Martin is now being housed in another part of the facility and is facing new charges - likely to result in a longer stay behind bars.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office pointed out the fact that Martin never left the jail, and the facility remains secure. Damage to the ceiling is being assessed and repairs are being scheduled.
