A rare Colorado lynx that surprised Purgatory Resort skiers recently has been found dead.

According to the Denver Post, the cat was found dead Sunday at the Purgatory Resort near Durango. It had been captured on video strolling around on the slopes at Purgatory.

The exact cause of death is being investigated, but one official said the lynx was emaciated, indicating it was in poor health.

A necropsy will be conducted to examine the animal's stomach contents, and to look for possible injuries or organ damage.

A lynx sighting in the state is extremely rare, as Colorado Parks and Wildlife estimates a total population of 250 in the state, largely found in the southwest Colorado's San Juan Mountains.
