It's been 25 years since the brutal murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey occurred in Boulder, Colorado, but yet authorities still have no idea who took the life of this vivacious young child.

JonBenet's father, John Ramsey announced the launch of a new petition, Justice for JonBenet Ramsey on Saturday, April 30 at CrimeCon in Las Vegas, Nevada.

What Is the New JonBenet Ramsey Petition?

The new Justice for JonBenet Ramsey petition is a direct plea to Colorado Governor Jared Polis to remove the case from the hands of the Boulder police and place it into the hands of an independent agency.

The petition states to Gov. Polis:

You are the only person with enough power and independence in the state to put Ramsey DNA testing decisions in the hands of a new agency that’s free from Boulder’s significant history with the case...

Governor Polis, you were born in Boulder 15 years before JonBenét. You have a connection to the city. Your intervention in the Colorado truck driver case shows you have compassion. You have the power. Given the lack of progress by the Boulder Police, we the undersigned petitioners ask you to move DNA decisions in this case away from the BPD to an independent agency so that JonBenét has a last chance at the justice she deserves.

How Did Boulder Police Respond to the New JonBenet Ramsey Petition?

The Boulder Police Department has since issued a press release in response to the new petition on the cold case.

Police Chief Maris Herold stated:

We have a shared goal to bring justice—and hopefully some peace—to JonBenet’s family and everyone who was impacted by her loss.  Our investigation with federal, state and local partners has never stopped. That includes new ways to use DNA technology. We’ve always used state of the art technology as it has been at the forefront of this investigation. Every time the DNA technology changed, we worked to make sure the evidence could be tested.

This investigation has always been and will continue to be a priority for the Boulder Police Department.

The Ramsey Family and the Boulder Police Department History

The Ramsey family's confidence in the Boulder Police Department eroded long ago when the department and District Attorney's office fumbled the investigation and the case numerous times.

For years, the Ramseys were the prime suspects in the murder of JonBenet Ramsey until suddenly in 2008,  Boulder District Attorney Mary T. Lacy penned a letter to the Ramsey family exonerating the family.

Unfortunately by that time, JonBenet's mother, Patsy Ramsey,  had already passed away, never knowing the truth about who killed her daughter, while also being framed as the murderer herself.

Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact the tipline at 303-441-1974,, or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477) or
