Grand Junction Colorado's Plaza Urrutia to be Named a Historic Property

The large concrete structure isn't just a decorative sign, it's actually a handball court that was built over four decades ago at the edge of Canyon View Park.

The court was installed by Jean Urrity back in 1978 with hopes of bringing the local Grand Junction community together, most notably those descended from Basque in Spain.

After all these years of sitting at the intersection of 24 Road and G Road as a sort of welcome sign to Canyon View, the Plaza Urrutia handball park will officially be added to Colorado's State Register of Historic Properties.

The gathering to celebrate the court's new distinction will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While the festivities coinciding with the park's inclusion into the exclusive register span several hours, the ceremony in which the park is added to the State Register of Historic Properties is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Spanish-style handball court echoes the roots intended by its creator not just in its unique shape, but the large, yellow letters that bear Plaza Urrutia's name, and the salmon color of the concrete walls make the structure especially iconic to the area.
