Picturesque Colorado Hike Leads to Abandoned Homes + Power Plant

There is no shortage of abandoned ghost towns across Colorado, many of which date back to the mining boom of the mid-1850s. However, just outside of a historic Colorado town in the middle of some of the most beautiful scenery the state has to offer, is a curious little abandoned area known as Skaguay.

Skaguay, or Skagway as it's often referred to, is a tiny, abandoned community high up in the mountains just outside of Victor, Colorado in Fremont County.

There are a few abandoned homes in the area, but the most notable building in the area is the Skaguay Power Plant.

Completed in 1901, the power plant was used to generate power for the aforementioned small town of Victor, as well as Cañon City. In addition to housing the necessary equipment to generate these cities' power, the building once included a gaming room, dance hall, and saloon.

However, after a nasty rainstorm back in 1965, the power plant was deemed too damaged to repair and the little community was abandoned.

Today, you'll find the building that once operated as the power plant with some of the equipment left behind, as well as four homes that have also been sitting abandoned for over half a century.

While attempting to visit places like this is usually discouraged, Skaguay is frequented by hikers due to its proximity to the popular six-mile hike, which takes anywhere from three to five hours to complete.
