New Data Finds Colorado One of the Worst States for Cybercrime

Recently, U.S. News and World Report, who does an annual ranking of each state, dropped Colorado to the 16th best place to live in the United States.

What was a major reason, you might ask?

Well, Colorado ranks as the 45th state when it comes to crimes and corrections.

However, it’s not just physical crime that Colorado struggles with, but cyber crime as well.

Coloradans at Fourth Highest Risk for Cybercrime in the United States

In a recent study, Networkbuildz combed through the FBI Internet Crime Report between the years of 2018 and 2022 to see which states suffered the most from cybercrime. 

As reported by Security Magazine, Colorado fell victim to 53,562 cyberattacks within that four year period. 2020 was the worst year for it, likely due to the pandemic, with 12,325 attacks.

That means there are 928 cyberattacks committed per 100,000 people in the state.

Finally, Coloradans lost a collective $508,886,418 to cybercrime in these years, and to be honest, it doesn’t seem like it’s getting better.

All together, these shocking statistics mean Colorado was the fourth worst state for cybercrime in the United States. 

What State is at Most Risk? 

According to the study, Nevada is at the highest risk of falling victim to cybercrime.

They had 1,756 attacks per 100,000 people between 2018 and 2022, which is nearly double that of Colorado’s rate.

That means they had a total of 54,515 cyberattacks, which is slightly more than Colorado.

1. Nevada - 1,756 cyberattacks per 100,000 people
2. Alaska - 1,153 cyberattacks per 100,000 people
3. Maryland - 951 cyberattacks per 100,000 people
4. Colorado - 928 cyberattacks per 100,000 people
5. Florida - 899 cyberattacks per 100,000 people
