Larimer County Opens Survey About New Data Center Facilities
Data centers are becoming more and more popular, across Colorado and the nation. With data centers being "somewhat" new, Larimer County doesn't have any regulations regarding them in unincorporated areas of the county.
I think that there are many of us that live in Larimer County that have fairly strong opinions about data centers, whether in favor of them, or against them. It was in late 2025 that GlobalAI purchased property in Weld County for a data center; many are excited, many are not, about the idea of a data center outside of Windsor.
Unincorporated Larimer County Has No Data Center, Yet
Larimer County currently has a moratorium on data centers in unincorporated Larimer County; that moratorium is in effect until August 26, 2026. By that time, they'll have developed land use regulations that address the specific impacts of data centers, also known as "digital infrastructure" or "high-intensity computing facilities."
Things that Larimer County is looking at in regards to data centers:
- Water Consumption: The high cooling demands of industrial-scale computing.
- Power Usage: The significant electrical load required to operate these facilities.
- Possible Nuisances related to noise, aesthetics, heat effects, and others.
- Suitable zoning that would determine where data centers would be located.
What Questions is the County Asking the Public About Data Centers?
The survey, which is live until June 12, 2026, asks people to rank their overall concerns, along with potential benefits of bringing data centers to unincorporated areas of Larimer County. It also asks if respondents would be in favor of one, and if they think there are certain areas where they should/shouldn't be allowed.
