Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon will be completely shut down for two days next week for rockfall mitigation.

The Colorado Department of Transportationinterstate announced the closure for what it calls "safety-critical rockfall work and helicopter operations."

A military style helicopter will be delivering 13 steel posts to be used for building protective fencing. Motorists traveling the I-70 corridor will need to plan ahead to make the necessary detours.

The closure will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, July 27 and 28 from 9:00AM until 3:30PM both days.

The eastbound closure will start at exit 116 (Glenwood Springs) and the westbound closure will start at exit 133 (Dotsero) Detours will be in place that was used earlier this year after a rockslide closed the canyon for several weeks.

At least during this closure motorists will still be able to get through if they travel early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
