How long will a Volkswagen Beetle float? There's a question you don't get asked every day. Let's find out.

The commercial doesn't exactly state how long a Beetle will float, but simply suggests it will. For all we know, that thing might have sunk right after the the commercial ends.

Which do you find more shocking, the VW Beetles ability to remain afloat, or the commercials advertised sticker price of $1,999.00? When was the last time you saw a new car available for $1,999.00? When have you ever seen a used car available for that little?

A question was posted to www.snopes.com, asking "Do you know anything about the rumor a Volkswagen Beetle would float?" A reply came back, "I don't know anything about the VW Beetles, but the vans seem to float well."

Here's an example of a modified VW Beetle which can float for an extended period.

Who's going around testing this stuff? Does a car's ability to remain buoyant add to its value? The next time you find yourself shopping for a new vehicle, are you supposed to ask the salesman the "buoyancy" factor of the car?

Well, unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any empirical research indicating the precise duration a VW Beetle will stay afloat. Perhaps it's time somebody put the Beetle to the test.
